Nursery News/Plant Sales

Good news!

The supervised volunteer work days and informational walks have been re-instituted at Griffith Woods, and we'd love to have you join us. They'll take place on the last Saturday of each month (June 30, July 28, August 25 for sure). With your help we'll be maintaining the tavern grounds, working in the nursery, and trying to control invasive species. Bring clippers or loppers, gloves, bug spray, sun screen and a picnic if you like. There's a lot to learn and love at this wonderful place, and we need your support.

Why a nursery?

One of the key purposes of the Friends of Griffith is to restore most of the property so that the plant species onsite are those that would have been likely to be onsite before Europeans began altering the landscape. To achieve this, the Friends are actively cooperating with the owners and managers of the site: University of Kentucky, The Nature Conservancy, and the Kentucky State Nature Preserves Commission.

Towards this purpose, the Friends of Griffith Woods operate a nursery onsite and coordinate volunteers for exotic plant removal and other restoration work.

How is this being funded?

In addition to providing plants for landscape restoration at Griffith Woods, the Friends have a limited supply of plants to sell. Upcoming sales dates are April 21, at The Nursery at Griffith Woods, and April 28 and May 12, at the UK Arboretum, in conjunction with the Friends of the Arboretum.

How do we know what the site was like before Europeans arrived?

Working with the Friends and other botanical experts, Julian Campbell is leading an effort to create a peer-reviewed species list for restoration in the central Bluegrass Region. Anyone interested in that effort can contact Julian, Deborah White (KSNPC), or the .
